The controversial resolution stated that "Illegal immigration negatively impacts the City of Albuquerque in many different ways." Calling for the federal government to increase border security, it stated, "the citizens of the City of Albuquerque have been victimized by crime due to illegal immigration."

Albuquerque citizens, however, disagreed and organized to let their representatives on the city council know that they support immigrants' rights.

Organizers Mobilize the Community

“This is a testimony to the hard work people are doing organizing the community around immigrants rights,” said Adonai Morales, Community organizer for El Centro de Igualdad y Derechos.

“Being called illegal immigrants already impacts our youth,” Vaneli Salinas, a recent graduate of West Mesa High School told the crowd of over a hundred people who gathered outside City Hall to protest Monday, June 7, 2010. “Now we are being criminalized.”

While some held signs calling for real immigration reform that respects the contribution of immigrants, others held white wooden crosses and others paper flowers.

“These flowers are to honor those who are not here due to fear,” explained Rachel LaZar, who introduced the speakers. “We who are documented need to stand up for those who are not.”
