Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is known for many of his accomplishments, including winning the Nobel Peace Prize and his work in the realm of human rights. His many speeches and writings have become well-known civil rights literature, and today are used in the teaching of persuasive writing and rhetoric.

Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have A Dream" Speech

Perhaps Dr. King's most famous speech, his "I Have A Dream" speech was made on August 28, 1963, during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom that King helped to organize. According to American Rhetoric, King's "I Have A Dream" speech tops the list of the top 100 speeches in American history.

In his "I Have A Dream" speech, King urges listeners, lawmakers, and all citizens around the world to "make real the promises of democracy." The Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute says that King, in writing this speech, compiled pieces and parts of previous speeches, sermons, and writings "to capture both the necessity for change and the potential for hope in American society."
