Michael J. Bird was a TV writer of the old school, breaking into the business when the chance came his way to pen an episode of Danger Man, Patrick McGoohan’s 1960s spy series. Bird’s previous experience in a variety of jobs served him well as a source of creative inspiration and human insight in an era of unashamedly escapist yet adult-oriented television. His talent was such that within a few short years he found himself in a position to pitch a pet project to a BBC producer and see it commissioned.

The Lotus Eaters

The Lotus Eaters offered an unusual blend of exotic espionage and quirky character drama. The Greek island of Crete was the setting, and the focal point was a bar run by an expatriate English couple with a murky past. Ian Hendry played Erik Shepherd, tough yet vulnerable, something of a British Bogart figure. Janet Munro, his intended co-star – and offscreen, his soon-to-be ex-wife – was in the event replaced by Wanda Ventham. Accomplished character actors Maurice Denham and Stefan Gryff relished their supporting roles as, respectively, reprobate painter Nestor Turton and Captain Krasakis, a philosophically-inclined Cretan police officer. The programme ran for two series in the early 1970s, and contributed to the rising popularity of Crete as a holiday destination. Bird was keen to develop a spin-off series centring on the Krasakis character, but the BBC balked at the potential budget, also citing the overabundance of cop shows. And then a chance encounter with a World War Two veteran making a return pilgrimage to Crete inspired Bird to come up with a new story.

Alan Haldane Returns to Crete

Edged out from his own successful boat-building business by boardroom machinations, middle-aged widower Alan Haldane jets off to Crete to get away from it all and take stock. Above all, though, he is drawn to the island by bittersweet memories of a wartime love affair. Fighting the Nazis alongside the Cretan partisans, Haldane made a name for himself as Leandros, their staunch ally and brother-in-arms. He fell for a local girl, Melina, and his love was reciprocated, but when the war took him away and he attempted to maintain contact through letters, Haldane interpreted Melina’s failure to respond as a waning of interest. Little does he know that now, more than three decades later, his return to the island will stir up a veritable hornets’ nest of seething passions, jealousy and hatred.
